My role
I worked on this project as a lead UX designer. Key areas of responsibility:
- UX analysis (Flows and Site map)
- Lo-Fi prototyping (basic flow)
- Hi-Fi Prototyping (complete app flow)
- Design (Android App)
The Challenge
How to replace pen and paper forms with a digital solution that is easy to use and intuitive so any user can be able to use it with no trouble.
The User
Police officers who can use a mobile phone and own a low to mid-tier cellphone have at least a high school education.
Technical Constraints
It was a requirement to use Material Design as the main UI style of the app.
Strategy:
The primary goal was to transfer the analog forms to a digital platform.
As a secondary goal was to keep it simple and intuitive to use.
Scope:
1. Offer the user the ability to navigate around the different levels of the form.
2. Verify the status of the reports.
3. Have a clear language for the user.
Structure:
I did an analysis of the information provided by the customer and made the first approach to a structure, that later I transformed into an information architecture map, in which I used Overflow to establish how the app will work.
This approach helps me understand how everything is connected and how the initial navigation can work.
Skeleton:
With the information gathered, I designed in Sketch the first wireframes in which I addressed the features I wanted for the app.
I used an accordion and Tabs with progressive disclosure in order to give the forms a organized way to navigate, It also allows the user to keep the order in which the form needs to be filled and if needed the user can also go back if something needs further edition.
Surface:
As the requirement for the UI, Material Design is the dominant style to follow, so I based the following designs on it.
Results
I delivered the final product to the Android developer with whom I maintained constant UI revisions to see the correct implementation. After finishing the development phase, they presented the final product in Mexico.
